ALL-STAR WEEKEND.

Jeff Skinner of the Carolina Hurricanes, youngest player to ever be chosen to play in the All-Star Game flickr.com

January 28, 2011
So a lot has happened this week in hockey NHL world, there haven’t been that, many games this week because of the All-Star game this weekend, the draft is later on tonight, the game itself is tomorrow, and the skills competition is on Sunday. The skills competition is open to players and rookies alike, where as first time NHL players cannot play in the All-Star game in most circumstances. The can participate in the Skills Competition which is supposed to be a fun relaxed competition… just look at Ovi’s hat.  Several players that were originally chosen to play in the All-Star game will not be able to participate due to injuries or for personal reasons. Jeff Skinner is a rookie for the Carolina Hurricanes who originally was only supposed to play in the Super Skills competition but because of recently openings in the team line-ups he has become eligible to play in the games. Eric Staal is “willing to do whatever to takes to get him on his team.” He wants to keep it all in the family, Jeff Skinner is also the youngest player to ever play in the All-Star game.  I will update later on the final roster for the All Star games after Lidstrom and Staal pick their teams.
We have a lot of scoring to get caught up on…so let us begin.

The Brothers Staal, met Marc, Jordan, Eric and Jared a powerhouse clan of brothers that are all currently playing professionally in the NHL. The four brothers like four horsemen hit you all at once and they hit you hard, and may have a pretty intense hangover in the morning. Born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, Eric, 25 is currently playing for the Carolina Hurricanes (if that name sounds familiar GOOD! it should he was named as a Captain for the All-Star event this upcoming weekend), he was drafted in early 2003, and has played 6 seasons as #12 for the Hurricanes, Eric also has the fun experience of playing with his youngest brother Jared, 20. Jared played for the San Antonio Rampage in the 09 season (Rampage is the AHL affiliate team for the Phoenix Coyotes, remember AHL is kind of like the “JV” teams for the NHL teams.) Jared was traded in May of 2010 to the Carolina Hurricanes and plays as number #27, along side his big brother Eric. Middle brother Marc, 23 plays for the New York Rangers, and was drafted with the Rangers first round pick in 2005, he has had three NHL seasons as #18.  And last, but certainly not least is Jordan 22, who we all got an up-close look at during HBO’s Winter Class 24/7 special, Jordan has played 4 NHL seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins as #11, he won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in ’08-’09. (thanks wiki).  Even though the teams they play for, as always whenever New York, or Pittsburgh are involved, are sworn enemies, the brothers never fail to bring a fast and furious game.

FEROCIOUS FRANSON

So after last night’s games I really hoped for some awesome games tonight, and I was not disappointed, Tampa Bay beat Atlanta by 6 goals! The Devils beat the Panthers, which is just adding to the team’s recent bout of wins and successes. Then last period of the Flyers/ Blackhawks game turned quit eventful with four goals alone in the last period out of only sixteen shots taken.

OVI'S VISIT FROM HIS FAIRY GOALMOTHER.

January 22, 2011
Some absolutely awesome games tonight. Even with some big players missing from the game, teams rallied together and looked awesome. Big players who have been going through slumps have started to pull out of their slumps, and rookies are stepping up to fill the shoes of players that are not playing up to their full potential. Braden Holtby saved 36 goals tonight, and finished with a .972% save percentage (blocking 97 of the 100 shots aimed at him), Fleury finished the night with 26 blocked shots, and a .923% save percentage. Stone defiantly wants to be part of helping me teach myself (and you all!) about hockey so he took sometime and broke down the goals, assists and play times of some of the top games of the night, which is below the scores, speak of scores…

Also so news regarding the All Star game it seems as though Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin will not be playing. Sid due to the concussion he received in the Winter Classic. Malkin will most likely be out because of a knee injury he has been nursing for most of the season. A shame that they will not be playing however, it is much better sit out and nurse an injury so they can be back to playing at full potential for playoffs. With them being out and a few others this opens the position for a few more players to be pulled up to play in the game Stones pulling for Kovalchuk.
The Captians of the All-Star teams have also picked their Alternate Captians:
            Nicklas Lidstrom C (Detroit Redwings
Patrick Kane A ( Chicago Blackhawks)
Martin St. Louis A (Tampa Bay Lightning)

Patrick Kane #88 for the Chicago Blackhawks, chosen as an Alternate Captain for  Nicklas Lidstrom

            Eric Staal C (Carolina Hurricanes)
                        Mike Green A (Washington Capitals)
                        Ryan Kesler A (Vancouver Canucks)
Ryan Kesler #17 of the Vancouver Canucks, chosen as an Alternate Captain for Eric Staal

I would put bets, that now especially that Sidney Crosby is sitting out on the All Star events, we are looking at either Steven Stamkos or Alexander Ovechkin being picked first for the fantasy draft.

BRAVO BRODEUR & BRYZGALOV

Congratulations to Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, who earned is 119th career shutout in Thursdays game vs. Pittsburgh Penguins. sports.yahoo.com

January 21, 2010
So sorry about the delay defiantly was exhausted last night. So let me tell you there were some AWESOME games. The New Jersey Devils beat the Pittsburgh Penguins honoring Martin Brodeur with his 114th (OMG!) regular season shut out! It is only his 4th of the season however with the recent changes in the team the New Jersey Devils are defiantly a team to watch.  Pittsburgh played down to major players last night with Sidney Crosby still out from his minor concussion from the Winter Classic, and Evgeni Malkin out with an undisclosed injury. HB pointed out the way the Devils set up their passes and attacks around the Pittsburg net, they really looked like seasoned veterans which most of their team is composed of. It is very apparent when going back and forth between the Caps game and the Devils game the Caps are a young team with a lot of speed and hunger, where as the devils are paced and know what they need to do in order to be successful and it was really good to see them looking so much more like a Stanley Cup contending team, and a huge congrats to Marty.
