I learned what the AHL is, FINALLY (I have been very VERY confused so I hope this helps) it’s like the JV teams of the NHL, so for example: The Washington Capitals “JV Team” is the Hershey Bears. The purpose of the AHL teams is development; coaches can sporadically pull up, and put back down players throughout the season until they are 100% ready to be contracted and a full time player (ex: Brian Willsie and Andrew Gordon of the Washington Capitals)
THE BREAKDOWN:
· New York Islanders – Bridgeport Sound Tigers
· New York Rangers – Connecticut Whale
· Los Angeles Kings- Manchester Monarchs
· Buffalo Sabers – Portland Pirates
· Boston Bruins – Buffalo Providence Bruins
· Columbus Blue Jackets – Springfield Falcons
· San Jose Sharks – Worcester Sharks
· Philadelphia Flyers – Adirondack Phantoms
· New Jersey Devils – Albany Devils
· Ottawa Senators – Binghamton Senators
· Carolina Hurricanes – Charlotte Checkers
· Washington Capitals – Hershey Bears
· Tampa Bay Lightning – Norfolk Admirals
· Anaheim Ducks – Syracuse Crunch
· Pittsburgh Penguins – Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
· Calgary Flames – Abbotsford Heat
· Detroit Red Wings – Grand Rapids Griffins
· Montreal Canadians – Hamilton Bulldogs
· Colorado Avalanche – Lake Erie Monsters
· Vancouver Canucks – Manitoba Moose
· Florida Panthers – Rochester Americans
· Toronto Maple Leafs – Toronto Marlines
· Atlanta Thrashers – Chicago Wolves
· Minnesota Wild – Houston Aeros
· Nashville Predators – Milwaukee Admirals
· Edmonton Oilers – Oklahoma Barons
· St. Louis Blues – Peoria Rivermen
· Chicago Blackhawks – Rockford IceHogs
· Phoenix Coyotes – San Antonio Rampage
· Dallas Stars – Texas Stars
The “Stanley Cup” of the AHL is called the Calder Cup, named after Frank Calder, who was the first president of the NHL. The current Champions of the AHL are the Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals affiliates).

Oh and I am very exited to welcome back D.J. King to the Washington Capitals lineup. King has been out for the last 17 games due to a serious bone bruise on his foot that he received at practice on December 12. Mike Green also plans on playing in tonight’s game after missing practice yesterday (Monday morning) due to a cold. Cutie Andrew Gordon hopefully will be seen tonight, it looks like either Gordon or Beagle will be scratched tonight, no offense Beags but I adore Andrew Gordon such a happy kid! I would love to see him again! Eric Fehr, Matt Bradley, Mr. Tom Poti and Alexander Semin will not be playing tonight due injuries.
Michael Neuvirth (CAPS) and Sergei Bobrovsky (FLYERS) will be in goal tonight.
Laperriere and Pronger for the Flyers will not be playing in tonight’s game due to injuries.
Side note: Archie and I went to a Caps practice a few weeks ago there was a three year old little boy waiting for his practice to start, and I asked him who is favorite CAPS player was and it the most squeaky adorable voice ever, ‘MISTER TOM POIT!’ so from now on whenever I say Tom Poti its always Mr. Tom Poti. *
